How It Works

Enter your seed. All 128 strongholds are drawn on your real overworld terrain, and the panel lists the nearest ones to the center of the map with distance, direction, ring number and Nether coordinates.

Click a stronghold for its exact coordinates. The end portal room is inside; bring 12 eyes of ender in case none of the frames already have one.

Java and Bedrock

The terrain is the same for both editions: since 1.18 one seed gives the same overworld on Java and Bedrock.

Strongholds work differently on Bedrock: the first three sit under villages, usually 1,000 to 6,000 blocks out, and the rest are scattered over the whole world, so there are way more than 128. Pick your edition and the map shows the right ones.

Accuracy

Java positions are built on cubiomes, a re-implementation of Minecraft's world generator, and I checked them against worlds made by real Java and Bedrock servers. If you find one that's off, tell me in the comments with your seed and coordinates and I'll look into it.

Reference: Stronghold Finder

Strongholds hold the only End portals in the game, so every run at the Ender Dragon goes through one. Knowing exactly where they are saves a stack of eyes of ender.

The stronghold rings

Strongholds are placed in 8 rings around the world center. The first ring holds 3 strongholds between about 1,280 and 2,816 blocks out, the second holds 6 between about 4,352 and 5,888, and so on up to 128. Their exact positions are nudged toward suitable biomes, which the finder accounts for.

Eyes of ender vs a stronghold finder

An eye of ender flies toward the nearest stronghold and has a 20% chance to break each throw, so finding one by eye can cost several eyes plus blaze rods from a Nether fortress. With the seed you can go straight there and keep your eyes for the portal frame.

Nether travel to a stronghold

Divide the stronghold X and Z by 8 and go there in the Nether, then light a portal. You arrive close to the stronghold having walked an eighth of the distance. The Nether coordinates are shown in the list.

How do I find a stronghold with my seed?

Enter your seed and every stronghold appears on the map, with the nearest ones listed with distance, direction and exact coordinates. The first three sit in a ring roughly 1,280 to 2,816 blocks from the world center.

How many strongholds are there?

On Java, 128 per world, in 8 rings around the center: 3 in the first ring, then 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36 and 9. On Bedrock there is no limit: three strongholds sit under villages, and more are spread over the whole world on a grid. Each stronghold has one End portal room.

Does the stronghold finder work on Bedrock?

Yes. Bedrock places strongholds its own way: the first three under villages, usually 1,000 to 6,000 blocks from the center, then more spread over the whole world on a grid. Pick Bedrock and the map shows those.

How do I get to a stronghold faster?

Travel in the Nether: divide the stronghold coordinates by 8, walk there in the Nether, and build a portal back. Each row in the nearest list shows those Nether coordinates. Speedrunners use exactly this.

What Y level are strongholds at?

Strongholds are underground, usually with the portal room somewhere between Y=-40 and Y=40. Dig down at the coordinates, or throw an eye of ender once you are close to find the right direction.
